Chapter I: Thomas Berthelemot

Second Generation | Writing the Next Chapter

Thomas Berthelemot faces a different kind of inheritance. Unlike domaines carrying centuries of family history, Domaine Berthelemot was founded by his mother Brigitte only in 2006 — giving its second generation the rare opportunity to help shape a legacy almost from its beginning.

Since joining in 2017, Thomas has brought a forward-looking approach to the estate, combining organic and biodynamic practices with increasingly precise vineyard observation and new ways of responding to Burgundy’s changing climate. Yet modernity is never pursued for its own sake. His philosophy is to use knowledge, technology and tradition together in service of the vineyard. The result is a domaine whose identity is still being written — and a second generation with the freedom, and responsibility, to decide what it will stand for.

Chapter II

A New Domaine with Older Roots

Domaine Berthelemot began in 2006 with Brigitte Berthelemot, making its family story strikingly young by Burgundian standards. Brigitte created the estate by bringing together vineyards formerly belonging to Jean Garaudet and Yves Darviot, but her affinity with the land came from her own family: she drew inspiration from an uncle who was a winegrower in the Mâconnais and from her father, whose passion lay in plants, soils and geology. Alongside experienced vineyard manager and winemaker Marc Cugney, Brigitte established the foundations and identity of the new domaine. Her son Thomas Berthelemot joined in 2017, giving fresh momentum to a family project that was barely a decade old when he arrived.

Chapter III

Old Vines, a New Identity

The vineyards themselves carry far more history than the Berthelemot name, spanning an impressive mosaic of Côte de Beaune terroirs and both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. From Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet to Pommard, Volnay and Beaune, the estate was built around the idea that these established parcels should retain their individual voices. Brigitte's early philosophy consequently favoured finesse, healthy old vines and precise expressions of terroir rather than forcing a uniform house style across the range. Thomas inherited something unusual: not a centuries-old family formula, but the foundations of a domaine still defining itself. His work in organic farming — certified in 2021 — and increasingly precise viticulture is therefore helping determine what the Berthelemot name will mean for generations to come.

In His Words

“The balance between new ideas and tradition is extremely important for our future...but we mustn't forget how the older generation worked and crafted great wines.” — Thomas Berthelemot
