Chapter I: Laurent Lignier

Fifth Generation | Refining a Family Signature

Five generations into the Lignier story, Laurent has little interest in reinventing a name already synonymous with Morey-Saint-Denis. Instead, his evolution of Domaine Hubert Lignier is quieter — peeling back the winemaking to bring the vineyards even further forward. Old vines, natural yeasts, increasingly organic farming and a restrained hand in the cellar allow each terroir to retain its own personality.

The result is Burgundy with depth but never heaviness: structured yet sensual, precise yet remarkably elegant. Laurent’s generation is not one of dramatic revolution, but thoughtful refinement — proving that sometimes moving a great domaine forward means knowing exactly when to step back.

Chapter II

A Legacy Rooted in Morey-Saint-Denis

The Lignier story began in 1885, when Jacques Lignier acquired his first parcels in Morey-Saint-Denis. His son Jules later helped restore the vineyards after phylloxera, before the estate passed to Henri Lignier and then his son Hubert, who expanded the family holdings and introduced estate bottling in 1973. Hubert’s son Romain later joined the domaine, bringing new ideas to the vineyards and cellar before his untimely passing. His brother Laurent Lignier subsequently returned to work alongside the family, eventually taking the reins and carrying the Lignier legacy forward.

A Tradition Built for Time

The domaine eventually grew to around 11 hectares, centred on Morey-Saint-Denis while encompassing distinguished Côte de Nuits terroirs including Clos de la Roche Grand Cru and parcels in Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin. Under Hubert, it earned a reputation for rigorous winemaking and serious, age-worthy Burgundy — wines built around depth, structure and the natural character of their vineyards. Laurent inherited this powerful foundation but gradually moved the domaine towards greater delicacy and precision, eliminating synthetic vineyard treatments from 2007 and eventually achieving organic certification in 2019. Today, another chapter is already beginning with the gradual arrival of Laurent's children Sébastien and Maëlle.

In His Words

“Wine quality depends more on the quality of the work done in the vineyard, moderate yields and severe sorting... In conclusion, there is not one single way to make a great wine, but several, and it is what is exciting! Maintain our diversity and identity is key, this will also be our strength against the standardization of the taste in the world… ” — Laurent Lignier
