Chapter I: Nicolas Groffier

Fourth Generation | Power, Rewritten

Nicolas Groffier inherited formidable material: old vines, extraordinary terroirs and some of Burgundy’s most coveted parcels. His challenge as the fourth generation was not to make these wines more impressive, but more articulate.

Since joining Domaine Robert Groffier, Nicolas has progressively refined its style around a simple idea: concentration should come from the vineyard, not be manufactured in the cellar. Whole clusters, extraction and oak are therefore treated as tools rather than recipes, adjusted according to what each parcel and vintage demands. The wines retain the depth expected of Groffier, but increasingly reveal another side — silkiness, finesse and remarkable precision. Nicolas has not softened the domaine’s identity; he has given its power greater definition.

A Legacy Built on Exceptional Terroirs

The Groffier family's winegrowing story reaches back to the 19th century with Frédéric Groffier, but much of the domaine's extraordinary vineyard patrimony was assembled by his son Jules Groffier. During the 1930s through the 1950s, Jules acquired important parcels in Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru — including Les Amoureuses — as well as Bonnes-Mares and Chambertin Clos de Bèze. His son Robert Groffier then shaped the modern domaine, becoming an early advocate of estate bottling and building the reputation attached to the family name. Robert's son Serge began working alongside him as a teenager and took responsibility for vinification from the 1980s, before Serge's son Nicolas Groffier joined the domaine in 2005 and ultimately assumed its winemaking direction.

Chapter III

A Domaine Defined by Extraordinary Parcels

Although the Groffier cellars sit in Morey-Saint-Denis, remarkably the domaine owns no vineyards there; its roughly eight hectares are instead concentrated in some of the Côte de Nuits' most coveted terroirs. These include Bonnes-Mares and Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grands Crus, alongside three Chambolle-Musigny Premiers Crus and approximately one hectare of Les Amoureuses, making Groffier its largest single owner. Earlier generations built a reputation for concentrated, structured Pinot Noir with the substance to age, while Nicolas has progressively brought greater precision, perfume and finesse to that inheritance. The extraordinary vineyards have remained constant; what has evolved is how clearly they are allowed to speak.

In His Words

“Our task is not to impose a style, but to let each parcel speak with its own voice — while preserving our appellations and the craft passed down from generation to generation.” — Nicolas Groffier
