Domaine de la Fourmone dates back to 1765, when the estate was a working farm, mainly growing wheat. In fact the place takes its name from the Latin word frumentum, which means grains.
At various points in its history vines were planted on the property although in the 1860s phylloxera wiped out virtually all of the region’s vineyards and it wasn’t until after the Combe family purchased the estate in 1910 that Domaine de la Fourmone was once again producing wine.
Fast forward to today, the domaine is run by the 5th generation of the Combe family to own and operate Domaine de la Fourmone; Marie-Thérèse, her daughter Florentine, and son, Albin. Long gone are the old fields of wheat and today the domain covers a total of 37 hectares: 20 ha of Vacqueyras, 10 ha of Gigondas and 7 ha of Cotes du Rhone, all organically farmed.
For all the wines, they prefer fermentations with indigenous yeasts in concrete, with very little to no oak ageing to achieve what they feel is a pure and unmasked expression of their Provencal terroir. The absence of any intense oak regimen in the cellar is what they feel distinguishes the wines from the domaine.
The estate is situated in the Vacqueyras AOP, and their 20 ha of vines for that appellation are located mainly around the domaine itself. The Gigondas vineyards are located on the southern slope of the Dentelles de Montmirail, with all vinifications take place at the domaine in Vacqueyras.
